Minnesota Law Enforcement Explorer Association
The Plymouth Police Department has had an Explorer program since
1984. The program is designed for young people between the ages of
14 and 20 who are interested in learning about the many aspects of
police work. The program is a way for young people to meet and
interact with police officers on a regular basis and learn first
hand what the duties and responsibilities of police officers are.
Explorers meet every Tuesday from 7:00-9:00 p.m. during the school
year and on a limited basis during the summer months. Explorers are
taught how to respond to and handle police-related calls through:
classroom instruction, participation in practical exercises, field
trips, guest speakers, and regular ride-alongs with officers on
patrol. Topics include: Domestic Crisis Intervention, Burglary in
Progress, Hostage Negotiation, Bomb Threat, Crime Prevention, First
Aid, Traffic Stops, Search and Arrest, Crime Scene Investigation,
Accident Reconstruction, Firearm Safety, and Tactical
Decision-Making.
Our training efforts are put to the test every Spring at the annual
MLEEA State Conference. Not only is the state conference a way
for the Explorers to compete and demonstrate what they have learned,
but it is also a way to meet Explorers from around the state,
interact with different local, state, and federal law enforcement
agencies, and earn scholarship money for the Post.
Plymouth Police Explorers also assist with many community and
metro-wide events, including: Music in Plymouth, Plymouth on Parade,
DARE banquets and graduations, McGruff, National Night Out, local
safety fairs, the 3M Golf Tournament, Minneapolis Grand and
Torchlight parades, and much more!
