The Moorhead Police Explorer Post was established in 1989 and remained active until 2000, when it folded. In 2004, three officers decided it was time to resurrect the program. Officers Joel Voxland, Chris Martin and Scott Kostohryz saw a need for the program from the department standpoint as well as a desire from youth in the community.

In September of 2004 the Post was reborn. We took on 16 new members from 27 applicants in the surrounding area. The Moorhead Post is the only active post in our area, so interest was high. We began training right away and decided on weekly meeting to maximize our explorers to all there is to learn in this field.

We began by training in areas outlined at state and national conferences and quickly branched out to traffic control, DWI enforcement, SWAT, Defensive Tactics, and simunition training. The explorers enjoy the hands on training we provide and keep coming back. In 2005, we lost five explorers for various reasons (age, college, etc.), but quickly filled the gaps by adding seven new members.

Last April, our post joined 48 other posts at the state conference we all know as Breezy. It was the first time at Breezy for all eleven explorers who attended, as well as two of the three advisors! We found our way to our events and managed to place in three of them (3rd place Street Decisions, 4th place Hostage Negotiations, and 4th place Crime Scene Search). One of our faster explorers, Adam Kne, also took 1st place in both competitive runs. Tyler Iverson, one of our new explorers, plans on challenging him for those trophies this year!

Our post is fairly new (after the four year hiatus) and with all new advisors and explorers, we are testing our abilities in community activism. In September of 2005, several explorers volunteered their time for two days searching for a missing Minnesota State University-Moorhead student who was eventually found in the Red River. Some of the same explorers volunteered their time to then come in and assist in typing statements used to charge several fraternity members who contributed to the death of this student by providing alcohol to him at a party. At the time of this posting, two of the individuals have pled guilty.

Our Explorers have been very helpful in assisting with parades, marathons and National Night out. Our post is very active and looking forward to getting more involved. We also plan on attending Breezy again this year as well as making our first trip to Nationals to help Minnesota posts dominate.
