Minnesota Law Enforcement Explorer Association
The Hastings Police Explorer Program began in 1985 by, then
Officer, Chief Mike McMenomy. Officer McMenomy, along with
other officers in the department, wanted to see young men and women
have the opportunity to experience the Law Enforcement field.
With knowledge of Law Enforcement, the explorers would be able to
make a more knowledgeable decision in choosing the correct field for
themselves.
Currently, our post consists of seven general member (three of whom
are officers) and four advisors.
Our exploring post is very involved within our community.
We help out with our Rivertown Days festival, walk/run/bike
marathons, sporting events, and Neighborhood Crime Watch, only to
name a few. At these events, we provide security, direct
traffic, and any other tasks that are needed of us.
Our post meets on an average of three Sundays per month for three
hours. As we get closer to the State and National Conference,
we will meet more frequently. The highlight of the year is to
attend the annual Minnesota Law Enforcement Exploring Conference,
held at Breezy Point Lodge in Breezy Point, Minnesota. The
National Conference allows explorers to travel to many new places
and meet other exploring post from across the nation. This
year was the first year that our post has been able to attend the
National Conference, which was held in Flagstaff, Arizona. Our
post brought home second place in Emergency Field First Aid
competition and was raked within the top 10% of the Nation for that
event.
Throughout the year, we prepare in the areas of:
Bomb Scene
Burglary
Court System
Crime Prevention
Crime Scene
Criminal Code/Statutes
Domestic Assault
Firearm Safety and us of
First Aid
Handcuffing
History of Law Enforcement
Hostage Negotiation (Crisis Negotiation)
Physical Training
Report Writing
Search and Arrest
Traffic Accident
Traffic Stop
Warrants
In our post, we strive to involve Physical Training (PT) into our
meetings, whether we are running, weight lifting, learning tactical
defense, or mat PT, it remains to be an important role in our post.
PT, along with the demerit system, is a way of discipline within our
post.
Selected members are also involved with the Honor Guard. The
explorers must pass academic and physical test, along with other
requirements, to be a part of this elite group. We are the
only post in Minnesota to have an Honor Guard. Seven of our
post members are involved in the Honor Guard. We study our
manuals and practice our movements to be the best that we can be.
We have done numerous details including the Law Enforcement Memorial
parade in St. Paul and other events such as the posting of the
colors at the Minnesota Supreme Court hearing.
Our post members are allowed to ride along with police officer for a
patrolling shift. Throughout the year, we get the opportunity
to be more involved with the Police Department and our community.
The top three explorers that help at events, who attend meetings
consistently, and have a professional attitude, are given special
privileges at the Minnesota Law Enforcement State Conference.
An explorer will be chosen out of the top three and be awarded with
the title of Explorer of the Year. This explorer will be given
a ribbon, which will be worn on his/her uniform. The
post Captain, Lieutenant, Sergeant, and Corporal are also given
special privileges along with extra responsibilities.
Our post is not all work, we have fun too! Whether we are out
on the town or crashing at someone's house, we have a good time.
Exploring is a wonderful program, which opens many doors for the
programs individuals. If you are interested in becoming a
member, give us a call and set up a meeting.
